Celest St. Claire's Notes
Hey,
As I mentioned in my note, I’m sure that my conclusions will match Sullivan’s. That being the case, if you’ve already asked him about these clues, you probably won’t learn anything new here.
If you do choose to use this site, you’ll still need to email Sullivan about the case’s Solution once you’ve figured out where Allen Gyre will meet his handler.
If you haven’t emailed Sullivan yet, you can visit SleuthKings.com/Case-304 to send him your first email. When you want to tell him where Allen will meet his handler, just include the word Solution in the body of your email.
If you need help figuring out where Allen will meet his handler once you’ve solved Clues 1-4, you can send Sullivan a message with the word Location in the body of your email.
If you want to see my thoughts on any of the clues in your case file, just click the corresponding button below.
So far, I’ve been able to decode the first eight sets of cards. They say:
“Meet me ten minutes before the magic show.”
I know that there are still quite a few cards left to decode, but hopefully this helps point you in the right direction.
Good News! I just finished decoding the rest of the cards. The full message says:
“Meet me ten minutes before the magic show. Fill in poker players for meeting place. First word is: facedown.”
Wait a second – Debra’s magic show is today! That means there’s not much time left to find the meeting place. Hopefully Sullivan calls Agent Cooper, the FBI agent that he and Brian are working with, to let him know to get down to the casino ASAP.
Based on the cards’ message, it sounds like you’ll need to work through the rest of the clues if you want to figure out where the spy is meeting his handler. As you do, it sounds like you’ll find an eight-letter word on each clue that will come in handy.
According to the message, the invitation’s eight-letter word is “facedown.” I think that means you’ll want to write “facedown” around the poker table with the heart on the tournament map. Once all four tables have words written around them, they should help you find the meeting place’s location.
Don’t forget, if you need any help finding the meeting place once you’ve solved Clues 1-4, you can send Sullivan a message with the word Location in the body of your email. If you haven’t sent him your first email yet, you can do so at SleuthKings.com/Case-304.
I’m pretty sure the note that says, “Enjoy the first sip of each drink,” is telling us to look at only the first letter of each drink that the ingredients are pointing us toward.
When you’ve found all eight drinks and have their applicable letters, I think the next step will be to unscramble the letters to spell an eight-letter word.
No worries – I just figured this one out.
The first thing to look at are the drinks that the ingredients are referencing. In no particular order, they are:
Babe, Fog, Newsie, Lug, Fuzz, Gum-shoe, Undertaker, and Iron.
Then, looking at only the first letter of each drink, you get:
B, F, N, L, F, G, U, I
I got stuck here for a little while myself, but eventually figured out that the only word these letters can be rearranged to spell is “bluffing.”
That must mean that “bIuffing” is the eight-letter word we’re looking for. I know that doesn’t seem like it’s really going to heIp us find the spy’s meeting place, but hopefully it will.
If we’re right, that means you’ll want to write “bluffing” around the poker table with the club on the tournament map.
So, I’ve noticed a few things about the symbols on the ad. The first is that two of the symbols groupings in each window also appear around the words “Quick, come play slots.” One of the group’s symbols is always to the words’ left, while the other is always above the words.
If I’m looking at this correctly, what we want to do is figure out which letter in “Quick, come play slots” the two symbols intersect at. When you find the intersection, that letter is what the inner symbol in the window stands for.
Once you know what letter the inner symbol in each window is, you’ll want to replace the matching symbols at the bottom with the correct letters. When you do, they should spell out the eight-letter word we need.
I got it! Just like I thought, the trick is to look at the symbol groupings in the windows and see how they correlate to the symbols around the words “Quick, come play slots.”
Let me give you an example. The symbols in the top left window are a pear, a gun, and bananas.
The pear also appears beside the word “Slots,” and the bananas are above the fourth column. That means you want to look at the fourth letter in the word “slots,” which is “T.”
Since the gun symbol is also in the window, that means the gun at the bottom of the ad stands for “T.”
When you repeat that process for the rest of the groups, the symbols at the bottom of the ad spell the word “luckiest.”
I’m pretty sure that means you’ll want to write “luckiest” around the poker table with the spade on the tournament map.
I haven’t quite figured out the pattern on the back (with PAY + ORATE), but I’m pretty sure we need to pay attention to what number each letter is in the sequence rather than which word its in.
This one was tough, but I just had a breakthrough!
The trick to finding the pattern on the front (with FUEL + ETCH) is to skip the final two letters of the second word and read the remaining letters left-to-right. When you get to the first word, you continue reading, but then have to stop before the word’s first two letters.
When you do that, FUEL + ETCH gives you the word “TELE.”
For the pattern on the back (with PAY + ORATE), you have to ignore which word is first and which is last. Instead, you just want to pay attention to where each letter is in the sequence and read the first, fourth, fifth, and seventh letters.
When you do that, PAY + ORATE gives you the word “PORT.”
Last but not least, you have to combine the first word and the second word to spell the keyword we’re looking for. When you do, you get the word “Teleport.”
With that in mind, you’ll want to write “teleport” around the poker table with the diamond on the tournament map.
Of course, once you’ve figured out where the meeting place is, you’ll need to send Sullivan an email to let him know. When you do, be sure to include the word Solution in the body of your email so he knows what you’re talking about.
Good luck!
